The tangram is an ancient Chinese geometric puzzle consisting of seven flat pieces (tans) of various shapes, which can be arranged together to create new shapes and figures. The objective of the tangram puzzle is to create specific shapes based on their outline or silhouette using all seven pieces.
The tangram was first invented in China’s Song Dynasty – over 1000 years ago – and has been described as “the earliest psychological test in the world”. To date, over 6,500 unique tangram problems have been created. Solving these problems, or trying to create new configurations, is one of the simplest (and best) educational tools. Tangrams provide endless entertainment and mental stimulation for all ages, and are especially beneficial for improving shape recognition, problem solving, and pattern design skills.
